It’s entirely possible I’ll have trouble with Ubuntu on down the road.

At work, we’ve got about 30 servers. Most of them (25 or 26) are Ubuntu servers. There is no GUI, no X Server. They’ve been running solidly for years.

With CentOS, or Red Hat, or Fedora, I always seem to get in to RPM Dependency Hell, which is a black hole. So I formatted over that black hole and installed Ubuntu and I’ll have to say, I do like it. It doesn’t treat me wrong, and (mostly) works very, very well.

I’ve never used Debian, so I can’t comment on it. But I have you guys for that.

I tried to use/upgrade/downgrade the udev package in Gentoo but none of it helped. It still stands that I had a stable system, upgraded, and then I had a system which would not boot up again. From a SysAdmin point of view, there is a technical term for this: bad.

So I tend to gravitate to those systems which give me the least trouble, and are the easiest to administer.

Just look at the author of the second link. He was almost as pissed as I was. But he was (at least) able to repair the system. Whereas I ran out of time.

The forum threads you linked to mention the solution: disable the SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 kernel option, because it is incompatible with modern udev.

You will also be notified of this when upgrading udev. But that is easy to miss when you don’t read portage elog messages.

Excellent, now you’ll have problems every 6 months OR 3 years, depending on what version you installed.

Debian should have been your choice.

Could the problem be that you needed to use uuid instead of /dev/sda?

If so, that type of problem is not immune to Ubuntu. After all, Ubuntu and all distros pretty much use the same underlying kernel

Seriously, the more I use Debian the more I understand that Ubuntu really is “Debian spoiled”. It has the superficial appeal I guess – to some – but that comes at a cost to the very system, where it matters.

I’d like someone to name one (good) thing that I could get in Ubuntu that I can’t get in Debian.

I cant understand how someone can recommends Ubuntu.
Ubuntu actually sucks! Linux for dummies.
If you want a great distro, try Debian, Arch or Slackware.

Mostly because of all the experience I’ve had with it. When I get familiar with a system (and it doesn’t stab me in the back), I tend to keep on using it. Installing new packages is easy and upgrades are easy.

Ubuntu? Meh.
Debian.

If you’re not running a desktop system and don’t need to be patronised by Mark Shuttleworth, you get everything Ubuntu has, plus stability and reliability.

Try ARCH linux.. its like gentoo w/o the headaches, compiling time and its lightning fast and once installed it actually lets you use your computer instead of your computer laughing at you when you do a simple update
