Serenity

Starring: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Ron Glass, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and David Krumholtz.

Fantastic! Everything about the movie was great! And, along with the story, you get to find out how the Reavers came about. Also got some good backstory on how Simon busts out his sister.

Serenity is the name of the Firefly-class cargo freighter. The original show was called Firefly. It’s too bad that the show got axed right as it was getting good. But here’s something interesting: Someone is going to take a look at this movie and say, “Hey, we should make a TV show out of Serenity!” That would be awsome.

On a technical note, I like the silence in the space scenes. I like it because there is no sound in space; for sound to occur, there needs to be an atmosphere. In the show Firefly, all the scenes in space are silent as far as sound effects go. There may be music in the scene, or a voice over a radio, but there are no sounds of things happening in the scene. I think this is very realistic.

I enjoied the movie a lot, and I can’t wait for more! The fight scenes were wrenching to watch; very well done. I just love seeing a little girl kick ass. The bad guy was a good bad guy, meaning that I really wanted to see him die in some suitably horrible fashion. The comedy was hillarious, as usual. I didn’t like certain losses, but would like to know the reasons for ‘em.

In short, I hope they continue to make more movies and/or TV shows in this universe. And yes, I’m definately buying it when it comes out on DVD.

Flightplan

You know, bad guys just don’t get it! Don’t cross Jodie Foster! You’re gonna loose every time! She’s gonna figure it out and kick your ass in the end.

Flightplan is another excellent thriller starring Jodie Foster. She’s really earned my respect. She’s excellent in her craft and she can really make a good thriller. I went to see this movie without even having seen a preview or read anything about it. I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t even know who else was starring in the movie!

I just knew one thing: Jodie Foster. What more is there to know? She’s excellent and she has, once again, made a fantastic thriller.

BTW, I never even suspected who the bad guy was until the movie let me in on it. There were two clues that I missed. I won’t spoil it for ya; go and see it!

I’m definately buying this one when it comes out. I am reminded of Panic Room, which I own in Superbit format.

Hollywierd

Aaah, Hollywood at night. The sights, the sounds, the wierdos. Lemme tell ya, you can meet some interesting creatures in Hollywood.

My roommate and I often go walking into Hollywood just for the fun of it. Sometimes we’ll walk in to see a movie, and by the time it’s over, it’s dark. On the way back home, we pass by at least half a dozen night clubs. It seems women (and even some men) are very eager to stand outside wearing next to nothing for hours, just to get a chance to get inside where they can get loaded and scream at eachother for the chance of sex.

That’s Hollywood at night: Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll.

And… you know… somehow I get the feeling that it’s not so much sex as it is drugs and rock ‘n roll.

But hey, maybe that’s just me. ;-)

A Cingular Update

Last weekend I spoke with my Dad for over an hour and a half… from my house! I was quite astonished. The call was clear the entire time and I didn’t even get dropped! So, I guess they’re improving things a bit.

*However*, just yesterday I attempted to make a call from outside my building (where I normally have no trouble at all) and got the familiar message, “Call Failed:”. There was (and never is) any explanation as to why the call failed. I had *full signal strength* at the time. After much experience with this message, I’ve finally learned how to handle it: “hardshock” the phone.

The “hardshock” method is what Cingular Customer Service uses whenever I call with a problem. It seems to be their only method of solving problems. I’m used to it. I “hardshock” my phone every morning before I leave for work.

Yesterday, after receiving the “Call Failed:” message, I knew exactly what to do: “hardshock”. I opened the battery case, yanked the battery (without powering down the phone), waited 10 seconds, put the battery back in, put the battery cover back on, and powered the phone back up again (which requires I hold down the power button for 5 seconds). Then I wait for the phone to boot back up again and enter my code. After that, the phone searches for a network. All in all, I’d say it’s about two minutes or so before I can use my phone again.

After the “hardshock”, I tried to make the exact same call again and *BOOM*, connected within a second.

Wierd, but that’s Cingular.

Transporter 2

Starring Jason Statham as our hero, Alessandro Gassman, Amber Valletta, Kate Nauta, and Matthew Modine.

Lots of fun! I enjoyed it a lot and will probably buy it (but I won’t pay full price for it).

WARNING: If you are bothered by things like reality, don’t watch this movie. I don’t let little things like reality get in the way of enjoying a good action movie.

My roommate and I have a joke about these kinds of movies. We use two phrases to describe these types of movies: ‘Deep’ and ‘Love Story’. It’s neither, but that’s the joke.

Anyway… as I was saying, it’s lots of fun. Our hero doesn’t let reality get in the way of doing impossible stunts and pretty darn good fight scenes. He’s quite the martial artist.

It’s basically more of the same as the first Transporter movie, which I also saw in the theater. They seemed to be more clever with the fight scenes in the first one, but I still throughly enjoyed it.

Movie Theater Auditorium Ads

I went to see a movie last night (more on that later) and was assaulted by animated advertisements before the show.

AMC started this trend with a slide projector show. You’d sit there and wait for the movie to begin, and watch ads. I didn’t pay to see these ads. I paid for a movie.

I liked Mann Theaters because they DID NOT do this. No longer; the Mann’s Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood plays animated ads with sound while you’re waiting for the movie to begin. The image is good, it must be an extremely hi-quality hi-def projector, but still… I didn’t pay to see these ads. It’s annoying.

I whipped out my ChessMate game in my phone and played Chess until the movie started.

If I’m going to spend the bucks and take the time to go see a movie in a theater, I DO *NOT* want to see ads before the movie begins. This is cheap and I feel betrayed somewhat.

So far, the ArcLight is sill good. They seem to be doing things right, including assigned seating for all shows so you don’t have to scramble for a seat.
