The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

DON’T PANIC. Starring Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, and Bill Nighy.

Awsome. Awsome! And fabulously awsome! It’s been a while since I’ve read the book, but still, I recognized so much in the movie.

Was it funny? Hell yeah! I laughed my ass off! That’s not to say that you will laugh your ass off if you were to go and see it, but there’s a good chance that you would. And hey, it’s got lots of cool visuals to keep your short attention span occupied. Zooey Deschanel, for example.

The animated guide is also pretty darn funny. Just ask it anything and you’ll get a (usually) hillarious little explanation accompanied by a cute little colorful animation of the subject.

I’m definately buying this when it comes out and I hope they make all four in the trilogy!

Kung Fu Hustle

Directed by Stephen Chow. Starring Stephen Chow, Chan Kwok Kwok Kwan, Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu, and Huang Sheng Yi.

As the name (and all the promos) suggest, this movie is a hillarious riot! I loved every minute of it! It’s kinda like a fantasy Kung Fu comedy.

I say, “fantasy Kung Fu” because most of the martial arts techniques in the film move into the realm of, “Whoa! If only THAT were possible!” Meaning, of course, waaaay cool.

And I say, “comedy” because–obviously–you’ll be laughing your ass off through most of it.

I had a great time watching it. I saw it again last night and even picked up a few more details that I missed the first time.

I’ll definately be buying this one when it comes out; it’s lots of fun.

Sahara

Directed by: Breck Eisner. Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Penélope Cruz, Steve Zahn, Lambert Wilson, and William H. Macy.

This movie was a lot of fun! It’s a really fun adventure movie. And what made it really enjoyable were the characters: I liked ‘em!

I’ll be buying it when it comes out. Why? Because even though it’s somewhat predictable, I’d love to see it again. I think that’s the mark of a good movie.

Sin City

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller, and Quentin Tarantino as a special guest director.
Starring a whole slew of fine actors people: Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Nick Stahl, Powers Boothe, Rutger hauer, Elijah Wood, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Jaime King, Devon Aoki, Brittany Murphy, Josh Hartnett, Michael Madsen, Michael Clarke Duncan, and more!

We need more movies like this! I loved it. It plays out as a collection of stories from Sin City. The style is that of a comic book; mostly black-and-white or gray scale, sometimes high-contrast two-tone, with occasional splashes of color. Personally, I would have liked more color, but that’s just because I prefer color over B/W. Just about all the main characters are monologing, explaining things as the scenes play out. This is excellent for two reasons: 1) it helps explain what’s happening and why, which is sometimes very difficult to do only visually, and 2) it’s pretty darn funny when the character uses metaphores such as, “I was as good at that as a palsy victim doing brain surgery with a pipewrench”.

These characters ere outrageous! And it seems pretty difficult to kill any of ‘em in Sin City. Marv, the big lug who loved Goldie, for example, was one of my favorite characters. The guy was an antihero, tough, and pretty darn funny in the wording of this thoughts. You could knock him down, hit him with a car (three times in a row), beat on his head with a baseball bat, etc, and he’d just come back for more.

A warning: this film is very violent and extremely graphic in it’s gore. If you’re queasy about such things, don’t see it. Consider yourself forwarned; if you do see it, go in to the movie with two things: 1) the expectation of seeing very nasty stuff… and 2) a steel gut.

I’m definately going to buy it.
