We need more movies like this! I loved it. It plays out as a collection of stories from Sin City. The style is that of a comic book; mostly black-and-white or gray scale, sometimes high-contrast two-tone, with occasional splashes of color. Personally, I would have liked more color, but that’s just because I prefer color over B/W. Just about all the main characters are monologing, explaining things as the scenes play out. This is excellent for two reasons: 1) it helps explain what’s happening and why, which is sometimes very difficult to do only visually, and 2) it’s pretty darn funny when the character uses metaphores such as, “I was as good at that as a palsy victim doing brain surgery with a pipewrench”.
These characters ere outrageous! And it seems pretty difficult to kill any of ‘em in Sin City. Marv, the big lug who loved Goldie, for example, was one of my favorite characters. The guy was an antihero, tough, and pretty darn funny in the wording of this thoughts. You could knock him down, hit him with a car (three times in a row), beat on his head with a baseball bat, etc, and he’d just come back for more.
A warning: this film is very violent and extremely graphic in it’s gore. If you’re queasy about such things, don’t see it. Consider yourself forwarned; if you do see it, go in to the movie with two things: 1) the expectation of seeing very nasty stuff… and 2) a steel gut.
I’m definately going to buy it.
